At Cinema In Verde to Learn (Also) the Art of Communicating Science

The Academic Credit Program for University Students

Telling the story of the world around us is an art—an art that can also be learned at the Botanical Garden of Rome. Organized in collaboration with a university institution, the Polo Museale of Sapienza University of Rome, the second edition of the Cinema In Verde Festival will offer academic credits to students participating in the “Explore, Observe, and Document Nature and the Environment” workshops, scheduled for the mornings of September 20 to 22. During the Festival, the outdoor cinema venues will also become open-air classrooms, offering a training opportunity that connects young people with experts and professionals to learn the art of communicating science, a crucial skill in increasingly complex societies that depend on science-based decision-making.

The three meetings, designed especially for them, will feature documentarians, journalists, explorers, and directors, discussing the creative and production processes involved in making documentaries focused on environmental and scientific topics—from planning and research to production and distribution. These sessions offer training and dialogue moments to discover how to write and develop a project, the challenges faced by documentary filmmakers, and the relationship between an author and a researcher. Increasingly, these two figures are merging and collaborating.

Some courses from the Departments of Environmental Biology, Earth Sciences, and History, Anthropology, Religions, Arts and Performing Arts of Sapienza, and the European Institute of Design (IED) in Rome, recognize academic credits for students attending the workshops. Credit recognition procedures will follow the rules set by the degree courses, departments, and institutes already participating in the initiative. Information about the reference professors and credit recognition procedures is available on the websites of the participating courses.

For students enrolled in other degree programs, the recognition of credits follows the procedures set by their specific course for external educational activities. Students should ask an internal professor for availability to recognize credits for participation in the Cinema In Verde workshops and other activities.

The involvement of students is not limited to the workshops. This year, the Festival also features a second award for competing films, conferred by a jury of university students: the Germogli Prize, organized in collaboration with GSE – Gestore dei Servizi Energetici, the festival’s scientific partner.
